Tranquil Retreat

In the heart of the city, a shaded retreat, cradled by sandstone where nature and stillness meet.

The brief

The task was to create a seamless connection to a native-style garden that thrives in the shady understory, resilient to the challenges of urban life and curious bush turkeys. The garden was designed to offer a quiet, contemplative space, a refuge from the fast-paced rhythm of North Sydney.

The space

From the house, the garden unfolds like a green tapestry, transporting you from the city's energy into a meditative escape. A low sandstone retaining wall elegantly defines the space, doubling as an informal seating area for quiet moments.

Layers of textured, contrasting foliage frame a small, tranquil pond surrounded by palm and tree ferns, while a flagstone-paved nook invites you to pause and reflect. Large sandstone pads embedded in a gravel path connect the upper living spaces to the study, weaving through the landscape and creating a harmonious flow between indoors and out.
